ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS

Mara Powell has been immersed in the world of dog training and competitive showing since she was old enough to walk. Raised by parents who bred and showed both toy and sporting dogs, with a father who served as an AKC judge, Mara developed a deep understanding of dog training and handling from an early age. She entered her first dog show at just four years old, handling her parents’ dogs in breed and junior rings. By the age of ten, she had trained and shown her own English Springer Spaniel to achieve its AKC championship title.

With mentorship from prominent professional handlers, Mara’s passion for dog showing flourished and became a lifelong pursuit. For more than 20 years, she has dedicated herself to teaching the art of dog handling, offering both group and private lessons in Broward County. She specializes in training show dogs to develop the confidence and polish required to excel in the ring.

Mara firmly believes that great show dogs are made through thoughtful training and conditioning. Whether owners seek to prepare a dog for competition or simply want a well-mannered, confident companion, Mara emphasizes positive, reward-based training methods to achieve the best outcomes. Her expertise includes canine conditioning, private and group handling lessons, coaching on anatomy and movement, and teaching essential techniques such as hard and free stacking.

Very informative for new groomers, a bit repetitive for anyone with salon experience. I loved Mara’s response to dogs pooping on the tables! Especially when she learned who the number one culprit is (iykyk!) I really enjoyed the discussion on collar and harness fitting. That is the hardest thing to explain to pet parents, and this discussion gave me new ideas on how to get that message across.
