Standard Poodle Pet German Trim

SHARING IS CARING:

Looking for a salon-friendly way to groom a Standard Poodle that still looks sharp and stylish? In this video demo, Kat Early showcases a pet version of the German trim — a practical modification of the traditional German style that uses more clippering, less scissoring, and a streamlined approach that makes sense for busy grooming shops.

What is the German Trim?

The German trim is a poodle style known for its elegant but low-maintenance outline. It typically features a shaved face, clean tail base, shortened ears, and tighter body for an athletic, balanced look.

In this demo, you’ll see a modified salon version of the popular German Trim on a Standard Poodle. The focus is speed and practicality: using clipper blades to set most of the lines, trimming down areas prone to matting, and simplifying details that would normally take much longer to scissor in a show groom. The result is a stylish poodle that looks polished without requiring hours on the table.

Key Modifications for the Pet German Trim

  • Clippered Topline & Body: The topline is set with a 5/8” starting after any dips in the spine, rather than scissoring to build volume. This creates a clean, even base in minutes.
  • Tuck-Up Placement: Quickly marked at the skin pinch or second-to-last rib, giving balance without spending time sculpting.
  • Rear & Chest: The rear is clipped to 1/2” with a simple angle, and the chest is shortened through the neck and shoulder — removing areas that tend to mat instead of scissoring for extra fullness.
  • Underline: Shortened with clippers to create a neat, flowy line, rather than scissoring to correct chest depth as you might in competition.
  • Legs: Column shape is suggested with skimming down the front using 3/4″ comb to cut time. Leg should be under the dog, which means there may be more hair on the back of the leg than the front.
  • Feet & Bevels: Bevels are clipped in with a #40 blade for consistency and speed — a time-saving alternative to detailed scissor bevels.
  • Face, Ears & Tail: The face is shaved clean, ears shortened with a #7 for the signature German look, and the tail blended into a terrier-inspired style instead of left fuller or sculpted.
  • Topknot: Built in quick layers with light hairspray for structure. Instead of sculpting volume for competition, the goal is a clean outline that holds up for a pet owner.

Why This Version Works in the Salon

The modified German trim is done with the realities of salon grooming in mind:

  • Time-Saving: Clippering replaces long hours of scissoring without sacrificing a polished finish.
  • Pet Practicality: Shorter lengths on the chest, ears, and neck keep dogs cleaner and more comfortable between grooms.
  • Customizable: Tail, ear length, and topknot can be adjusted depending on coat type and client preference.

This trim strikes the perfect balance between efficiency and style, making it a go-to option for poodle owners who want a smart, manageable look — and for groomers who need to keep their schedule moving.

Beautifully done. The structure, balance, and clean lines of this German trim really highlight the standard poodle’s athletic build. Clear technique, thoughtful execution, and a great example of functional elegance without needing to scissor for hours to achieve it.

Excellent instruction. I’ll be rewatching this one often.
